Application of LCA to Biogas System

Life cycle assessment (LCA) is an essential methodology for evaluating the environmental impacts of biogas systems throughout their entire life cycle. This study applies LCA to biogas production from organic waste, focusing on stages from waste collection to biogas utilization. The goal is to quantify impacts such as global warming potential, acidification, eutrophication, human toxicity, and ecotoxicity. Data on inputs (water, electricity) and outputs (biogas, digestate, emissions) are collected, and potential environmental impacts are assessed. The study identifies key impact hotspots, including waste transportation and methane leakage during digestion. Comparative analysis with conventional energy systems reveals the relative environmental benefits of biogas. Recommendations for system optimization include enhancing the feedstock mix, improving digestion efficiency, and better managing digestate. LCA results support policymakers in developing sustainable energy policies and guide biogas system designers toward minimizing environmental impacts. By providing a comprehensive evaluation, LCA enhances transparency and promotes informed decision-making for sustainable biogas production and utilization. This study underscores the importance of LCA in identifying improvement opportunities and supporting the development of environmentally friendly biogas systems.
