Scaling Up and Commercialization of Biomethane Production: Key Issues and Market Insights and Analysis

Against the pressing backdrop of global energy security concerns and the urgent need to decarbonize energy systems, biomethane production emerges as a strategic renewable fuel capable of directly advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This chapter is motivated by the critical need to identify viable pathways for scaling and commercializing biomethane, particularly through its integration with other renewables, to enhance economic feasibility, ensure grid stability, and maximize its contribution to a sustainable energy transition. This chapter examines key technical and economic factors influencing the scaling up and commercialization of biomethane production through a detailed case study of a hybrid renewable energy system in a Tunisian municipality. By modeling a system integrating 100 kW of biomethane generation with solar PV and battery storage, the analysis highlights the critical role of system design and hybridization in enhancing commercial viability. The optimal configuration achieved a competitive levelized cost of energy of $0.0856/kWh and a 77.8% renewable fraction, demonstrating that pairing biomethane with complementary renewables can significantly improve cost-effectiveness and grid independence. The system operated as a net energy exporter, underscoring a potential revenue model for scaled biomethane projects. Furthermore, the environmental assessment recorded carbon dioxide emissions of 57,714 kg/year, confirming biomethane’s advantage for decarbonization compared to fossil alternatives. The results underscore that successful commercialization hinges on optimized hybrid design, supportive grid policies for energy export, and leveraging biomethane’s dispatchability to balance variable renewables, providing critical insights for policymakers and investors targeting the scalable integration of biomethane into the energy mix.
