Biomethane Quality Analysis and Controlling

摘要

Biomethane is a renewable methane, which is a biogas that has been upgraded to become biomethane which is a sustainable source of energy that is of immense benefits in the environment and economically. Biogas, which is produced by anaerobic digestion (AD) of organic wastes like agricultural residues, municipal solid waste, industrial organic waste, and sewage sludge, normally contains 50–75% methane and carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, moisture, and trace gases. The process of water scrubbing, pressure swing adsorption (PSA), membrane separation, chemical absorption, and cryogenic is upgraded to increase the purity of methane to 95–99, which is enough to inject biomethane into the grid, use it as vehicle fuel, and in combined heat and power (CHP). The relevant quality parameters that include methane content, CO2, H2S, oxygen, nitrogen, calorific value, moisture, and the level of particulate matter are important in efficient and safe utilization. The biomethane introduction in internal combustion engines (ICEs) needs particular changes, such as the adjustment in the ignition timing, fuel air ratio, and purification to eliminate CO2, H2S, and moisture. The production of biomethane on the global and European level has increased significantly as a result of renewable energy policies like RE Power EU and is expected that by the year 2050, the amount of biomethane used in the EU will be between 628 and 836 TWh. In addition to energy generation, biomethane is useful in greenhouse gas mitigation, circular bioeconomy, sustainable agriculture, and rural economic growth. Nevertheless, the fluctuating quality of feedstock, wear and tear of engines, and cost of early conversions are some of the challenges which may hamper the implementation of biomethane; however, technological progress, hybridization, and integration of smart grids are all avenues that could help augment the implementation of biomethane to help the world transition to energy and avoid reliance on fossil fuels.
