Nanomaterial-Based Sensors for Macrolide Sensing

Recent developments in nanotechnology have empowered researchers to significantly advance all biomes of research, including sensing or detection of emerging contaminants, such as antibiotics, in both simple and complex matrices. This chapter is specifically dedicated to the discussion of the underlying role of various nanomaterials in the detection of macrolide antibiotics and their sensing mechanisms to enable their detection in biological samples, food products, and environmental matrices with confidence and incite further research to plug the existing gaps. In this sense, this chapter includes characteristics of nanosystems, followed by a detailed discussion of optical and electrochemical sensors with nanoparticles for macrolides detection. Finally, shortcomings in existing techniques are identified, and recommendations are provided.
