Correlates, Causes, and Consequences of Elder Abuse in the Current Contexts
摘要
There is a substantial increase in the number of cases of elder-abuse in several countries, including India. The present chapter looks into the magnitude, correlates, causes, and consequences of elder-abuse in the current context through stand-alone systematic review of literature. Findings delineate socioeconomic characteristics of the victims and perpetrators of elderly abuse. Dependence, gender, disabilities, physical, and mental morbidities fuel propensity of elder-abuse. Stress and poor coping abilities of caregivers may lead to elder-abuse. Interventions to curb the menace of elderly abuse carried out by various stakeholders – government and non-government organizations are discussed. The chapter also chalks out suggestive interventions to ensure rights and well-being of senior citizens and their due place in the society.
