Agism is a term that has been gaining currency to refer to the mistreatment of elderly persons, people who are aged 60 years and above, in a society. From indifference or neglect, to slighting and humiliating, to verbal harassment to bodily harm (through pushing and hurting), there are several different forms of abuse commonly suffered by the elderly. When the level of engagement of the elderly in social activities is greater, they tend to experience less abuse in society. Moreover, women seem to suffer more abuse as elderly than the men, as their social roles are relatively more circumscribed. Thus, elderly abuse seems to be gendered phenomenon too. And in this growing digital era, the elders are less competent and lacking the necessary skill sets to build an easy rapport with their grandchildren.
