Gender Resource Gap in Caregiving of Older Adults in India
摘要
Gender resource gap (GRG) impacts girls and women in all stages of life as they primarily perform care roles more so at the older age when they should be care recipients. The lack of control over resources excludes women from participating more in productive and community roles. The authors of this chapter represent Sathi All for Partnerships (SAFP) and have researched and developed networks of excluded people like orphan youth, Dalit, and tribal people to find that despite the GRG and the violence faced, women live longer than men. SAFP’s training programs with girls and women have motivated them to seek a role beyond being caregivers as empirical research informed SAFP that women are abandoned and they feel alone and lonely more when they pass their reproductive stage of life. Feticide, domestic abuse, and sexual harassment in public and at work place instils apprehension in early stages of life to comply and concede and not report injustice and violence faced. SAFP has advocated for safe spaces managed by women in neighborhood groups as one of the ways to address the GRG. This chapter analyses information from desk research and is also based on the findings of its experience with networks. This chapter will place issues around caregiving for older adults in light of the GRG and offers a policy solution on best practices experienced from the field.
