Poverty in older years inhibits access to essential services, adequate nutrition, reduces quality of life, and risks health complications and premature death. Financial wellbeing (FW) among older persons is essential to sustain the gains of development and poverty eradication and achieve the targets of sustainable development goal 1. The FW among older persons is a function of income, wealth, financial liabilities, and costs of living. In the era with high burden of non-communicable diseases and longer life-expectancies post-retirement, established pension systems and universal access to healthcare services are essential to ensure FW. However, ensuring access to adequate pension for older persons is a significant challenge faced by developing and developed economies alike. Specifically, with low penetration of contributory pension systems, and high proportion of population employed in informal sector, ensuring adequate pension is a significant challenge for low and middle income countries. Coincidentally, the high out of pocket spending and low per-capita government healthcare expenditure compromises the Universal Coverage of essential healthcare services. Innovative solutions are needed to develop sustainable financing models to ensure adequate pension and healthcare coverage for older persons. This chapter discusses the domain of FW among older persons as a cumulative product of individual’s financial readiness, pension systems, and healthcare systems.

摘要
