Health is a key determinant of quality of life for the elderly, and health issues hamper their ability and participation in active social life. Information regarding accessibility and utilization of health-care services is essential to plan for better health outcomes, while resource allocation and knowledge regarding barriers can aid in interventions for increasing coverage of services (Millman, Access to health Care in America, committee on monitoring access to personal health care services. Washington, DC: Institute of Medicine, National Academy Press, 1993). Accessibility of health-care services is important for promoting and maintaining health, preventing and managing the disease, reducing disability and achieving health equity, and meeting timelines of care and insurance coverage. The utilization of health-care services relates to the quantum of usage and actual coverage. The services for in-patient and out-patient at hospitals, preventive health care, and at-home services form the crux (Starfield, Bioethics 4(1):76–95, 2004). As the elderly find it difficult to access it alone, the role of networks becomes significant. Awareness, accessibility, and social support are crucial in actual utilization of services by the elderly, where social networks are expected to play an influential role. The objective of the study is to know the prevalence of health issues among the rural elderly women and examine the role of social networks in the utilization of health-care services by elderly women. Social networks are vital links in providing information and physical services for actual utilization. Health-care practitioners have to target primary caregivers and identify key network links for effective implementation of health-care services.
