The North Eastern state of Assam in India is undergoing a demographic transition toward aging of population similar to the national level. It is a multicultural state with different communities being in various stages of socioeconomic development. The Government of Assam has framed and implemented various programs and schemes for the welfare of the senior citizens. The Central Government schemes are also implemented through the various state government departments. The study is based on secondary sources. Information relating to the programs and schemes was collected from Assam Gazette Notifications, various implementing departments, and information from government portals available on digital sources. The welfare schemes for senior citizens in the state can be categorized into four broad areas. They are social assistance to senior citizens, health care provisions, financial support to government and nongovernment organization-run old age homes, and the employees’ parent responsibility and norms of accountability. The state is also one of the first in the country to implement the maintenance and protection of parents of employees’ act. The programs and schemes for senior citizens in the state of Assam are designed keeping in view the Sustainable Developmental Goals as well as the directives of the international agreements. However, at the ground level, a lot still needs to be done in matters of health infrastructure, raising awareness, correct identification and authentication of beneficiaries, and creation of a team of trained manpower that can help achieve the developmental goals for the senior citizens.
