Population aging is a global phenomenon which challenges the developed and developing countries. The changing family structure, migration of the younger generations, transformed filial piety values of young adults, increased life expectancy, and more number of empty nest years and dependency of the elderly are the major cause for elder abuse and neglect. Empty nest elderly are those whose young adults migrate from the family and the nest becomes empty wherein the elderly who resides with the spouse or alone. While comparing the risk and prevalence of abuse and neglect, the empty nest elderly have higher risk than the elderly who live with the children. In India, there is a very limited focus on abuse and neglect of the empty nest elderly. This chapter gives prime attention and sheds light on the prevalence of various types of abuse and neglect among the empty nest elderly by analyzing its causes and consequences. The abuse occurs among the empty nest elderly are neglect, disrespect, desertion, physical, verbal, and psychological abuse along with crime and victimization. The common perpetrators are the sons, daughters-in-law, the robbers and the criminals, and to some extent the spouse. If established or expansion of service is done, the senior cells in each area, elderly helpline, prevention and punishment by the police through home visits and protective services (NGO) will act as supportive measures to reduce the abuse and will ensure security and well-being of the empty nest elderly.
