The aging of the population will likely increase the incidence of elder mistreatment. Intergenerational abuse could be from overburdened caregivers or dependent abusers with addiction and/or mental health issues who spend resources and endanger the older relative. Intimate partner violence also occurs in later life. Mistreatment is multifaceted, and modern crimes also include sophisticated cyber financial exploitation. Elder mistreatment prevention should have a goal of interrupting violence, neglect, and exploitation, preferably before it causes harm. Policies in response to trauma are important, including Adult Protective Services, Victims of Crime Act, Violence Against Women Act, and the Elder Justice Act. Isolation made worse the preexisting problems during the pandemic. The COVID-19 crisis magnified the hardships, but also led to funding of policy.
