Recent advances in digital technology and the internet have propelled their increasing use in the delivery of healthcare, helping bridge systemic gaps of access to care. The COVID-19 pandemic has further accelerated the proliferation of technology-based solutions in healthcare delivery. Along with various geographically and socially isolated groups that stand to gain from this development, the elderly population is a clear beneficiary, with an increasing proportion of elderly persons using digital and social media, thereby narrowing the “digital divide” and paving way for the potential application of digital technology for service delivery targeting this group. Telemedicine is one such area of intervention that holds considerable potential for bringing healthcare to the homes of the elderly and significantly improving their quality of life. Various aspects of digital media and technology use need to be considered for the successful implementation of digital health solutions focused on the elderly. Research on existing systems, as well as policy frameworks laid down by national and international organizations, can help in designing effective and sustainable programs that integrate digital and conventional healthcare delivery solutions to ensure effective care. Successful models around the world, both from developed and developing regions, provide ample evidence that such integrated healthcare delivery is not only possible but probably the best way forward.
