As people grow older, their health becomes more complex, and the elderly need comprehensive health care. The health policies and the health system, currently remolded to achieve universal health coverage (UHC), are to deal elderly through exclusive elderly-specific health programs. As UHC ensures health care coverage of all people, exclusive health programs are being implemented for the elderly, who are about one-tenth of the country’s total population. The morbidity profile of the elderly is also unique, with more chronic diseases and disabilities, along with age-related debilities. Besides, changing family and kinship support systems India necessitates a comprehensive health care program. UHC framework attempted to cover primary and secondary prevention and health promotion, which will benefit the elderly. However, UHC’s implementation through Ayushman Bharat is to be examined for its actual utility to ensure affordable health care access. Some of the national health and social security schemes meant for the elderly are to be examined in light of their intended purpose and implementation issues. National Programme for the Health Care of the Elderly provides dedicated resources for the care of the elderly. Some social security/insurance schemes are designed for the elderly to reduce out-of-pocket expenditure. This chapter examines various health and social security schemes of the Indian government and discusses for betterment in achieving affordable health care for the elderly.
