Cybercrime Analysis of India Using Machine Learning

India is moving toward becoming digital day by day. We can see this through various campaigns like Digital India, Smart Cities, etc. With this increase in technology usage, our dependence on technology is also increasing daily. This dependence on technology has given rise to a new type of crime that is being committed nowadays, known as cybercrimes. Cybercrimes are any criminal activities that involve a computer, networked device, or network. Today, such crimes are rising rapidly as in these crimes the offenders are easily able to hide their identities. The fact, the number of cybercrime cases has increased by 6% since 2020, is proof that these crimes are a big threat. Hence, it has become essential for us to study and analyze these crimes and try to prevent them. The main purpose of this study is to analyze existing cybercrime rates and find patterns in them using machine learning algorithms like random forest, ridge regression, polynomial regression, etc. We will also use this pattern to predict future trends of cybercrime in various states and union territories of India. We will investigate motives behind such crimes so that the cybercell of government of India can deal with root cause of such crimes. The cybercrime rates and patterns are also visualized using various data visualization techniques like line graphs, bar graphs, etc. It was observed that for analyzing the number of and various types of cybercrime cases, the most suitable machine learning algorithm is multi-layer perceptron with R2 values of 0.998 and 0.985, respectively. For analyzing motives behind various cybercrime cases, the most suitable machine learning algorithm is ridge regression with an R2 value of 0.998. Using the most suitable algorithms for each analysis, it was observed that in years 2022, 2023, and 2024, Telangana will become the hotspot for cybercrime along with Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh. “Cheating by Personation by using Computer Resource” will be the most common type of cybercrime followed by “Fraud (Online Banking Fraud)” and “Identity Theft” in 2022, 2023, and 2024. “Fraud” will be the most common motive behind cybercrimes followed by “Sexual Exploitation” in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
