New Populism: The China Model

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is the vanguard of the state, and its survival has been dependent on the continued economic growth and well-being of the people. It is very much concerned about regime survival and peoples’ antigovernment sentiments which may turn to revolution against the Communist Party. China believes that it is the role of the state to provide economic growth and material well-being for the citizens so that they can be “controlled” by the party. The Party has occasionally encouraged nationalist fervor in China when the regime faces crises. This has been heightened since Xi Jinping came to power in 2013 and has propounded new and popular concepts like “National Rejuvenation”,” “Century of Humiliation,” “China Dream,” and “Common Prosperity” to place China in the league of major great powers of the previous millennia.
