摘要

With the growing influence and hegemony of globalization and capitalism, critiques of such forces are also becoming equally palpable. In this context, “culture jamming” refers to a political and social practice that seeks to subvert the symbolic power propagated by the mainstream media thereby engendering a “decentered” space to interrogate their agency. This subversive potential of culture jamming has often been utilized and appropriated by populist ideologies in order to consolidate such agenda. Cultural Jamming typically uses distortion or manipulation of semiotic representations of multinational companies to create satirical, ironic, or comic effects to produce anti-consumerist resistance. While the semantic activism of culture jamming is often utilized as a tool for orchestrating social change, promoting awareness and countering commodity fetishism, it has also been criticized for producing anarchism. Critics have also pointed out that by providing an outlet for consumer resistance within the framework of “communicative capitalism,” culture jamming can also ironically mitigate and diffuse its subversive potential. This entry looks into the historical, philosophical, and etymological genesis of culture jamming as a tool of populism, and intends to map the trajectory of its evolution into the new media and scrutinize its implications. In addition to providing an account of the artists, social activists, and organizations associated with this practice and their tactics, it seeks to offer insights into the contemporary criticism of culture jamming as populist strategy.
