Pragmatic Populism and Its Linkages to the 1919 May Fourth Movement in China

  • Ramnath Reghunadhan

摘要

In the modern era, China has been the epicenter of change and transformation, despite increasing evidence of populist protests and political iconoclasm against the State and its administration. Interestingly, populist protests in modern China can historically be linked to the May Fourth Movement in 1919, which transformed into an intellectual and political movement across the country. This also had future implications for developing divergent political ideologues and political systems in China. The entry explores the incidental and historical aspects of the 1919 May Fourth Movement while contextualizing the element of John Dewey’s pragmatic populism.
