Us Versus Them: An Interdisciplinary Analysis of the Interplay Between Migration, New Populism, and Xenophobia

Migration is one of the most significant societal challenges of the twenty-first century. It has prompted a worldwide debate on its various aspects, which has been influenced by economic, political, social, and cultural considerations. In many areas of the globe, the growth of new populism and xenophobia has emerged as one of the most crucial aspects to arise from this conversation. This study seeks to investigate the intricate link between these three events, focusing on how new forms of populism have evolved in reaction to immigration and how these movements have led to the growth of xenophobia. This entry will further investigate the many manifestations of xenophobia, including cultural, economic, and political xenophobia, in contemporary society. In addition, it will examine the elements that contribute to the growth of xenophobia, such as media coverage, political rhetoric, and societal attitudes toward migration. The author will elucidate the case studies from Asia, Africa, and Europe, where the interaction between the three concepts is prominent. The study will conclude with recommendations for tackling the issues created by the interplay of these three complex concepts. The entry will lay down ways to combat xenophobic attitudes and behaviors in society and encourage better integration of migrants. The research aims to contribute to a better understanding of the issues presented by migration and the emergence of populism and xenophobia in modern society.
