Dravidian and Dalit Populist Cinema: Democratizing the Tamil Film Space Using Convictional Aestheticism

The Dravidian movement and the film space in Tamil Nadu complement each other. It is a dynamic relationship that makes an (un)intended use of populist aesthetics that ensures a space of resistance against power structures. During the nascent stages of the movement, it employed populist strategies to sensitize the masses about the core values of Dravidian Ideology: self-respect, social justice, rational thinking, secularism, and women empowerment. In the process, film spaces became the fulcrum of disseminating Dravidian thought. Populist rhetoric and films helped the Dravidian parties to create a fortress in Tamil Nadu. In the present scenario, Dravidian political presence has democratized the film space. It provides a conducive ambience for filmmakers from several marginalized sections to voice their concerns. Despite the nativist anti-Dravidian trend in late twentieth-century Tamil cinema glorifying caste pride among intermediate castes, this entry contends that recent progressive anti-caste films reclaimed their space by leveraging the democratic landscape laid by the Dravidian movement. Especially over the last few years, the Tamil film industry has become a breeding ground for several Dalit filmmakers. They are empowered to represent their lives authentically, challenging past misrepresentations. The traces of populist elements, such as melodrama and hero celebration, find a predominant space in these films. However, the difference ensured by this left-wing populist movement is that it celebrates a hero who generally does not find a space in mainstream narratives. They adeptly balance their ideological commitment with engaging a broader audience through aesthetic populist techniques. This entry terms this phenomenon as “convictional aestheticism” and aims to trace the symbiotic relationship between their ideology and aesthetic production.
