Populism of Land Ownership, The: Resolving the State and Indigenous Through Climate Action

The entry demonstrates the clear link between the two large issues of democracies today – rising populism and climate change. Establishing and legalizing Indigenous people’s rights to the land by the state would support the maintenance of these lands sustainably and intensify national and international efforts on climate action. The states need to make tenure-security for community lands a pivotal climate-action approach. When more than 50% of the total world’s land is maintained by indigenous people, the indigenous are no more the “other.” As the populism regimes become senile disorders of democracies and the most important movement in contemporary politics (Revelli 2019); to understand the complexities between land rights for the indigenous and the global problem of climate change is compelling.
