Finance and Populism

  • Santosh Kumar Das

摘要

This entry attempts to understand the relationship between finance and the emergence of new populism in contemporary times. While questioning the dominant understanding which alludes that any form of populism is not good for finance as it brings in hyper uncertainties, it argues that there is no conflict between the two. Finance and new populism fairly complement and shape each other. On the one hand, finance has played its part both directly and indirectly that led to the rise of right-wing populist regimes; on the other hand, by doing so it has immensely benefitted from it in terms of making the postcrisis-regulatory architecture redundant to ensure its hegemony continues.
