Populism in the Public Sphere

Populism as an idea emerged from the questioning of the hegemonic and the elitist power in the society which were thought to be corrupt and oppressive. Being antielitist, populism connects with the public sphere to initiate a transformative role in shaping the collective conscience of the masses. However, the changing public sphere in the context of the global economy and new media communication has reshaped the understanding of populism. The binaries between the corrupt elites and the pure masses are no longer true in the larger dynamics of power and the emerging ideas of global solidarity.
