摘要

The introduction of bills and constitutional amendments to ban certain culinary practices and assert specific culinary identities has been an essential feature of the new populist regimes. The work, therefore, locates food as an object of inquiry to understand the present political climate by exploring the facets of new populist movements across the world. Gastropopulist movements are traced to understand how food becomes a means to strategically communicate political ideologies to the masses, thereby aiding in the rise of far-right parties. By locating the strong interconnectedness between food and populism, the work highlights how food becomes a multivocal site of ideological negotiations, political propaganda, identity assertation and othering, economic repressions, as well as resistance to authoritarian norms.
