Introduction

Field programmable gate array (FPGA) is a typical semi-custom integrated circuit. The function of an FPGA is decided by both chip vendors and end users. Just like many other semiconductors, the design process of FPGA highly depends on Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools. This chapter sorts out the complicated knowledge universe of FPGA technology, highlighting the EDA systems within. Due to FPGA’s semi-custom characteristics, FPGA EDA is very distinctive and can be accordingly categorized into two different fields: chip design EDA and application design EDA.
