Women with Epilepsy

Epilepsy poses challenges that are unique to women, due to the intricate interplay of epilepsy, hormones, menstruation, and pregnancy. The vast impact of hormones within the body can significantly impact seizure control in women with epilepsy (WWE), where the dynamic balance of estrogen and progesterone can alter the frequency of seizures in women. Many of the currently available anti-seizure medications (ASMs) exert influence on the endocrine system. It is these influences that increase the susceptibility of developing menstrual irregularities and sexual dysfunction in WWE, complicating the management of epilepsy. Pregnancy, in addition, constitutes special challenges for WWE surrounding the heightened risk of maternal and fetal complications. Addressing these complexities through tailored treatment and comprehensive research is essential to improving the quality of life and health outcomes for WWE globally.
