Transforming Agrowaste into Biochar—Sustainable Solutions for Agriculture and the Environment

Recent studies have revealed organic carbon's beneficial effects on soil health. The search is on for the best and most sustainable ways to sequester carbon and transform it into organic forms as the world works to raise soil organic carbon levels. Agriculture and agro-industries produce many residues on and off the farm. These residues are frequently unused and either burned on the field to prepare them for the following sowing or hauled off-farm as agro-waste. Converting these residues to biochar offers enormous potential for agro-waste management and sequestering carbon in the soil as organic carbon. Over time, biochar has shown promise as a solution for several environmental issues linked to carbon. It presents itself as a waste management method, a soil amendment utility, a source of energy, a substrate for microbial culture, a carrier for biopesticide and nutrient formulations, and so forth. Renewable resources play an essential role in sustaining resource limitations and environmental pollution. Biochar is undoubtedly a quick fix with great potential to convert renewable agrowastes to wealth. This book chapter aims to highlight the use of agricultural and agro-industrial residues to prepare biochar. It focuses on the various production methods, types of biochar, their applications in agriculture and soil amendment, benefits and drawbacks, and future prospects. In conclusion, it is anticipated that the current book chapter will undoubtedly open new vistas in the field of agricultural science to effectively and efficiently address environmental issues.
