Utilization of Biomass as a Co-fuel with Coal in Oxy-Fired Fluidized Bed

This chapter will present a broad overview of biomass as a co-fuel with coal in fluidized bed combustion (FBC) under air-fired (AF) and oxy-fired (OF) or oxygen-enriched (OE) conditions. Due to their superior thermal and mixing capabilities, fluidized bed technologies are widely employed around the world for thermochemical conversion. Many researchers propose the use of this technology for clean and sustainable energy in oxygen-enriched environments (air-enriched with O2, O2/N2 mode) and oxy-combustion environments (O2/CO2 environment and O2/RFG environment). This chapter begins with a description of research backgrounds, which gives an overview of power generation in India, waste-to-energy in India, fluidization systems, oxy-fired technology, and the requirements of co-firing/co-combustion in fluidized beds for energy generation. In addition, it provides the current status of co-firing/co-combustion in an oxygen-enriched environment. Finally, it discusses the experience of co-firing biomass with coal in a bubbling fluidized bed.
