Sustainable Management and Valorization of Microplastics

A rising danger to terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems is microplastic (MP) pollution. It is plentiful, enduring in the environment, and complex. Research on alternatives and prospective remediation strategies has received a great deal of attention due to the environmental, economic, and societal concerns regarding the impact of MP contamination on ecosystems. Studies on plastic/MP contamination in terrestrial ecosystems are scarce compared to studies on aquatic habitats, which have received substantial study and analysis. Recent developments in MP pollution cleanup technology as well as their ramifications for the economy and society have not been adequately studied. To completely eradicate MPs, it is essential to discover alternatives to traditional plastics and materials that can reduce or eliminate the issues connected to MPs. Additionally, waste management systems must be improved to limit plastic waste from leaking into ecosystems, and cleanup campaigns must be implemented. Due to its quicker degradation rate and greater susceptibility to microorganisms than normal plastic, biodegradable plastic is acknowledged as a viable substitute. Despite the significance of recycling technology, the majority of plastics are consumables that are thrown away after a brief period of use. Furthermore, only certain products are recycled, and they usually result in inferior products. Alternative methods of valorizing plastic trash are presented below. In order to manage these wastes profitably and sustainably, innovative and beneficial ways and/or strategies of reuse or recycling need to be developed. This is due to the enormous amount of non-recyclable plastic waste that is provided to the sorting plants.
