摘要

Deposition of overlay coating is a surface modification process applied to the degradation-prone engineering components to increase their functional reliability and life span. Among the possible coating processes, thermal spraying is the most effective method to protect the engineering surfaces from various kinds of degradation. Spray-grade powders of several metal oxides, carbides, and silicides are the commonly used conventional coating materials in this technique. However, the high cost and processing time of these materials often restrict their use in coating related applications and this challenge has prompted researchers to pay attention toward using low-grade minerals and industrial/construction wastes as potential coating materials. In the last few years, a noticeable number of research has been reported on using low-grade minerals and industrial wastes as the coating materials. The present report covers a few case studies reported by some previous researchers on the utilization of industrial wastes as the potential coating material. Additionally, some physical, mechanical, and wear behavior of these coatings are also summarized in this report.
