The global production of paper and paperboard in 2019 was approximately 419 million tonnes, with a projected increase of 1.7% by 2023. The presentation of paper results in waste paper generation, with around 242 million tonnes of waste paper produced globally in 2021. The disposal of waste paper presents significant environmental and social challenges. The environmental impacts of waste paper disposal include greenhouse gas emissions, water pollution, and deforestation. Effective utilization of waste paper is crucial for maintaining a sustainable environment. However, waste paper can also be transformed into economic opportunity through various utilization strategies that promote sustainable resource management. This chapter explores the potential for transforming waste paper into economic opportunity. The chapter analyses the current waste paper generation and disposal, highlighting this waste stream's environmental and social impacts. The chapter also examines the various strategies employed to convert waste paper into valuable products, including recycling, repurposing, and conversion into biofuels, composting, or other useful materials. The benefits and challenges of these utilization strategies are discussed, including economic, social, and environmental considerations.
