Petroleum Industry Waste into Wealth for Environmentally Sustainable Materials

Refineries are enormous hubs for producing essential and non-essential products we use daily. Mainly refineries are involved in converting crude oil into petroleum products as fuels for transportation purposes, heating and generating electricity, and as feedstock for making valuable chemicals. Large quantities of long-chain hydrocarbons are considered waste oil; still, these hydrocarbons contain many valuable compounds which can be used in different ways. Distillation, cracking, coking, reforming, recovery units, and other processing units are standard components of the oil refining process. The operation of these processes uses much thermal energy, which causes the refinery to release a lot of CO2 and H2S from various sources. An enormous amount of CO2 is being emitted as waste in refineries which can be used as a helpful product. An energy transition is a significant structural change in the energy system regarding consumption and supply. A shift to sustainable energy is made by recognizing that global greenhouse gas emissions must be zero. Crude waste to wealth is still challenging to the industry due to its operational cost. However, researchers are tangled to find the best way to reduce wastage and use it as a cheaper material in energy-efficient methods. Here, we discussed various recycling waste and waste mitigation methods and implemented them into more valuable products.
