Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe and can serve as a versatile and eco-friendly energy carrier. It can be produced from various sources, such as fossil fuels, biomass, and renewable energy sources. This chapter examines hydrogen production from biomass, a carbon–neutral and renewable alternative to fossil fuels. The cost and availability of feedstock pose significant challenges in the generation of biomass-based hydrogen. The type and quality of biomass feedstock can impact the efficiency and price of the hydrogen generation process. The demand for energy-efficient conversion techniques adds to the complexity. Despite these obstacles, synthesizing hydrogen from biomass offers several benefits. It is a sustainable and renewable source of hydrogen that can help minimize greenhouse gas emissions and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. This chapter discusses various methods for producing hydrogen from biomass, including gasification, pyrolysis, and fermentation. It also examines the benefits and drawbacks of each technology. The article also emphasizes the obstacles that must be addressed to economically and sustainably produce hydrogen from biomass. Overall, it provides a comprehensive overview of hydrogen production from biomass, highlighting its potential as a renewable energy source and its prospects.
