Bioenergy Production from Vegetable and Fruit Waste

The continuous growth of the human population is leading to an increasing global demand for fuel. Alternate fuels are desirable to address the issues of conventional fuels. Biomass energy is the fastest and promising source of renewable energy. Biofuels can be derived from biomass. Through biomass energy, waste mitigation or disposal can also be handled efficiently. The agricultural sector generates a significant amount of biomass waste, including unused parts of fruits and vegetables. This results in large quantities of food waste being produced worldwide. Approximately 14% of vegetables and fruits end up as waste annually on a global scale, leading to a substantial accumulation of food waste. Therefore, efficiently utilizing food wastes, such as vegetables and fruits, could be a way to derive biofuel and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. This chapter summarizes findings on the development of biofuels using different bioconversion technologies from vegetables and fruits as raw material. It also discusses processing methods, the acceptability of the resulting products, and potential uses of vegetable and fruit biomass.
