The Byzantine Gold Coin Unearthed from the Tang Tomb in Tumen Village, Xi’an

摘要

In 1956, a Byzantine gold coin was unearthed from the Tang tomb in Tumen village, the western suburb of Xi’an. After examination, this paper suggests that this Byzantine gold coin is a replica of Heraclius coin of the Arab Empire, dating back to the middle of the seventh century. These discoveries in numismatics are consistent with the documented records, indicating the active exchange between China and the West in the sixth-seventh century.
