History of Ancient Chinese Sericulture: Mulberry Trees, Silkworms, Silk Fibers and Textiles

China is the world’s earliest country to rear silkworms and produce silk, and for a considerable period of time was the only country in the world that produced silk. Based on archaeological data and relevant historical literature, this paper introduces the development of sericulture, silk reeling, and silk weaving in China before and during the Han Dynasty, including aspects such as feed for silkworms, silkworm breeding methods, types of fabrics and weaving techniques, and improvements in looms. This paper demonstrates the technical level of silk production in China during the Han Dynasty and earlier periods.
