A Brief Discussion of Sweet Potatoes and Dioscorea

This paper distinguishes a crop called “Shu” or “Shu Yu” in ancient China, which is not the present “Fan Shu” (sweet potato), but is today’s yam. Sweet potato was not cultivated in ancient China, while it was introduced and widely popularized to China from America in the late Ming Dynasty.
