Two Types of Script Combined on a Nestorian Tombstone from Quanzhou

  • Nai Xia

摘要

In 1954, a tombstone of the Yuan Dynasty belonging to the Arkagun (Nestorianism) was discovered in Quanzhou. The inscription on the tombstone was written in a combination of Chinese characters and Turki alphabetic script of Syriac origin, with two lines of each language. This paper provides a detailed analysis of both the Chinese and non-Chinese parts of the inscription and highlights the significance of the tombstone in the fields of religious history and linguistics.
