The Tibeto-Burman language group comprises the largest number of languages among all minority language groups in Southern China. Word order types and function words are the primary means of conveying grammatical meaning in this group. From the perspective of modern language typology, this chapter applies a typology of word order to nominal phrases in Tibeto-Burman languages in Southern China, based on the basic word order types observed. The analysis shows that the basic word orders include the order between verb and object (VO), verb and adverb of manner (AM+V),verb and adverb of negation (AN+V or V+AN), adjective and adverb of degree (AD+ADJ or ADJ+AD), adjective and adverb of negation (AN+ADJ), adposition (PREP+NP or NP+POS, AP+VP or VP+AP), appositive construction (EP+PN or PN+EP) and non-equality comparative constructions (S/T+ST+m+ADJ, ST+m+S/T+ADJ or S/T+M+ADJ+ST). The word orders of nominal phrases include the order between noun and noun (N+N(head) or N(head)+N), the noun and the genitive (GEN+N), noun and adjective (N+ADJ or ADJ+N), noun and demonstrative (DEM+N, N+DEM or DEM+N+DEM),noun and classifier (N+NUM+CLF or N+CLF+NUM), and noun and relative clause (N+RelV or RelV+N).
