Influence of Soil Properties on Pile–Soil System Response

In this study, numerical analyses with the hypoplastic constitutive model were employed. This paper presents results from an extensive numerical investigation involving 3-D finite element analyses to demonstrate the lateral response of monopile in the sand. Most of the researchers adopted the equation proposed by Poulos to define pile classification. This paper re-assessed five existing methods determining the pile critical length with the numerical results. The result presents that the equation proposed by Dobry is more suitable to predict the critical length of laterally loaded piles under various kinds of circumstances, while the Poulos method is suited to predict the critical length only under low relative density soil. Direct assigned and indirect calculated methods are also adopted and compared to determine the elastic modulus of soil. It turned out that the indirect method is more convincing considering different soil relative density, pile embedment, and friction angles compared with assigning soil elastic modulus directly.
