Research on Relationship Between Aerodynamic Configuration and Ability to Extinguish Arc in Switching-Type SPD

The application of surge protective devices plays an important role in ensuring the safe operation of power systems. Among all kinds of SPD, switching-type SPD is widely used in power systems due to its great surge absorption capacity. Spark gap is the main structure in switching-type SPD. It has the problem that the follow current arc in the spark gap will continue to burn due to the voltage at the SPD after discharging the surge current. This paper analyzes the development of the arc in the SPD arc extinguish chamber based on the magneto hydro dynamic (MHD) model. The relationship between aerodynamic configuration and ability to extinguish arc can be concluded. The result will be benefit for the structural optimization design of the SPD arc extinguish chamber. It also improves the safety and reliability of the equipment.
