Gullick, J[ohn] M[ichael] (1916–2012)

Gullick, J[ohn] M[ichael] was one of the pioneering scholars of peninsular Malay society during the pre-colonial era and then the British colonial period. His areas of scholarly interests included traditional Malay socio-cultural practices and political systems, Anglo-Malay relations and interactions in the colonial period, the history of Malay polities, and urban history in Malaya. Gullick was regarded as the last of the British scholar-administrators who ably combined their colonial bureaucratic appointments with scholarly inquiry, study, and exploration into indigenous political, socio-economic, and socio-cultural traditions, structures, and institutions.
