SCOTT, James C[ampbell]

James C[ampbell] Scott is an American political scientist and “anthropologist” whose work on the peasantry and ethnic minorities of Southeast Asia, among many other subjects, has been highly influential. His interests have focused primarily on the peasantry’s social and economic organization, livelihoods, and their responses and reactions toward domination. His preoccupations range from agrarian and non-state societies to subaltern politics and anarchism. Of particular importance, which has generated debates beyond Southeast Asia, has been his work on “moral economy,” “weapons of the weak,” “seeing like a state,” and the “art of not being governed.”
