John L[awrence] S[cott] Girling was not only a pioneering specialist on the social and political history of Thailand but also one of the earliest foremost authorities of international relations and current affairs and the politics and government relating to the Third World. Service in the British Foreign Office (FO) equipped him with practical experiences in the real world of diplomacy, politics, negotiations, and transnational ties in both Asia and the West for an academic career in the discipline of International Relations (IR).
