SUMITRO Djojohadikusumo (1917–2001)

Sumitro Djojohadikusumo (Soemitro Djojohadikoesoemo) was one of Indonesia’s economists who oversaw the transformation of the economy from near disaster and collapse in the early 1960s to emerge as one of the newly industrializing economies (NIEs) a decade thereafter in the 1970s. He served Indonesia as a newly independent nation through its liberal democracy experiment (1950–1959), Sukarno’s guided democracy era (1959–1967), and Suharto’s Orde Baru (new order) regime (1967–1998). Bapak Sarjana Ekonomi Indonesia (“father of the Indonesian economy”) was the title attributed to Sumitro in his later years.
