AUNG-THWIN, Michael A[rthur] (1946–2021)

Michael A[rthur] Aung-Thwin was one of the leading historians of Myanmar (Burma until 1989) and of the classical states of early Southeast Asia. Besides focusing on Myanmar’s historical development, from ancient periods to contemporary times, he sought to unravel some long-held historiographical opinions, viewpoints, and arguments that hitherto dominated the mainstream of this field of studies. Myths and the historiography of Myanmar were his scholastic forte with ground-breaking publications that challenged and provoked long-held orthodox viewpoints.
