His works on local history, utilizing innovative methodology, and offering a new dimension in the historical study of Islam, won him international acclaim. His areas of specialization include local history, intellectuals in Indonesia, Islamic theories, problems of development, and the effects of history on Indonesia in particular; these established him as a leading scholar of his native Indonesia.
