Heather [Amanda] Sutherland is an Australian historian and formerly a professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Her area of expertise is Indonesia with initial focus on Java, and in recent years, she shifted to Eastern Indonesia with her developing interests in Makassar and the wider Sulawesi. Social and economic history are her forte. A celebrated author, she had produced critically acclaimed scholarly works on Javanese and Sulawesi history.
