REID, Anthony J[ohn] S[tanhope]

Anthony J[ohn] S[tanhope] Reid is a highly regarded historian of Southeast Asia with pioneering works that captured and analyzed the region in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as an “age of commerce,” a phrase which has gained increasing influence in Southeast Asian scholarly circles. His research interests are wide-ranging; beyond general histories of Southeast Asia, he addresses specific themes such as the early modern period, social, economic, and religious history, nationalism, gender, ethnic minorities, European adventurers, and natural disasters. Aceh in particular, and Indonesia in general have been his main areas of interest.
