PURCELL, Victor W[illiam] W[illiams] S[aunders] (1896–1965)

Victor W[illiam] W]illiams] S[aunders] Purcell was a British colonial civil servant, historian, sinologist, and poet. He was particularly fascinated and, in turn, possessed a scholarly interest in the history of the Chinese, those on the mainland, as well as the overseas Chinese, specifically those that sojourned and/or settled in Malaya/Malaysia and Southeast Asia, and in China’s modern history. Purcell pioneered the study of the Chinese diaspora in Malaya/Malaysia and Southeast Asia.
